HFIP (hexafluoroisopropanol) is one of the few solvents capable of dissolving many crystalline polymers. In particular, it has become an indispensable solvent for measuring the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of polymers using GPC (gel permeation chromatography). However, HFIP is an expensive solvent, with a price of about 100,000 yen per kilogram.
